Colgate Closes Out Dugout Club Classic

Raiders topped 8-3 by Minutewomen

TALLAHASSEE – Colgate Softball closed the Dugout Club Classic on Sunday morning, falling 8-3 to Massachusetts.

Adrienne Nardone led the offense going 2-for-3 at the plate. Nardone, Steph Jacoby, and Jillian Herbst all had an RBI to end the day.

UMass got on the board early, adding two runs off freshmen Maya Servedio and Alexa Acker in the top of the second. The Minutewomen tacked on another pair of runs in the top of the fourth to lead 4-0.

The Raider bats got hot in the bottom of the fourth, as Nardone doubled to center with two outs on the board. On the next at-bat, Jacoby singled to the right to bring Nardone home and cut the deficit to 4-1.

UMass took offense to its shutout being spoiled, adding three more runs to the board in the top of the fifth to lead by six.

Senior Rachel Carney started a spark for Colgate on the second at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. Carney advanced bases on back-to-back at-bats finding herself in scoring position. Junior Kara Fusco also reached base on an error to have runners on first and third for the Raiders. Nardone went on to single to third base to bring Carney home for an unearned run that cut the lead to 7-2.

The Minutewomen scored one final cushion run in the top of the seventh to lead by six.

The Raiders tried to start a rally in the bottom of the final inning. Catcher Quinn Livesay singled, then advanced to second after Amanda DeSantis was hit by a foul pitch. Elizabeth Nitka came in to pinch run for DeSantis and ended up advancing after a wild pitch put Colgate on second and third base. Carney then walked on her turn at the plate to load the bases for Herbst. Sophomore Herbst also walked to bring Livesay home and cut the deficit to 8-3. Unfortunately for Colgate, the comeback was stifled as the bases were left loaded to end the game.
