Colgate Continues Dugout Club Classic

Elizabeth Nitka scored 2-of-4 Raider runs against No. 5 Florida State and Massachusetts

TALLAHASSEE – First inning runs from No. 5 Florida State and Massachusetts were too much for Colgate as the Raiders fell 13-2 to the Seminoles and 6-2 to the Minutewomen on the second day of the Dugout Club Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Elizabeth Nitka scored 2-of-4 Raider runs in today's doubleheader. The Douglassville, Pa., native ended the day going 3-for-5 at the plate. Rachel Carney and Jillian Herbst lead the team in RBI with two apiece.

GAME 1 | No. 5 Florida State 13, Colgate 2

Though Colgate tried to make some noise in the opening inning, as Jillian Herbst, Kara Fusco, and Adrienne Nardone loaded the diamond, two quick outs left the bases full to close the top of the inning.

Florida State took an early lead in the first, scoring five runs, with four scored from a four-RBI grand slam off Bailey Miksen. Sophomore Mia Edwards entered the game for Miksen to get the final out and leave a runner on base.

Catcher Quinn Livesay and infielder Nitka opened the second with back-to-back singles. Senior Carney brought home Livesay and Nitka after smacking a two-RBI double to right field to cut Florida State's lead to 5-2. Unfortunately for Carney, she was left stranded on third to end the inning.

The Seminoles took the definitive lead in the bottom of the second, tacking on three runs while Edwards was on the mound and another when senior Jenna Geffert came in relief of Edwards to extend the deficit to 9-2. Geffert dished out the last two outs of the second, ending the inning with a strikeout.

Florida State added four more security runs in the bottom of the third to take the game at 13-2 in five innings.

GAME 2 | UMass 6, Colgate 2

UMass got on the board early in the nightcap, scoring off a single to left field after two strikeouts from freshman Alexa Acker.

The Raiders did not touch base till the third inning, as Nitka singled, Carney walked, and Herbst reached on a fielder's choice, but they were eventually left stranded.

Senior Misken made her second appearance on the mound to relieve Acker, who allowed two runners on base in the bottom of the fourth. The Minutewomen added two runs off a double to bump their lead to three.

UMass added two final runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead by six, with one run coming off Misken and the final off Servedio, who came in to help out her fellow pitcher.

The Raiders caught a spark in the final inning as Nitka found herself on second after a single and wild pitch. Freshman Roman Mulholland fouled out to right field to advance Nitka even further to third and scoring position. Carney then walked and stole second on back-to-back at-bats before sophomore Herbst singled up the middle to bring Nitka and Carney home to cut the lead to 6-2. Ultimately, it was too late for a Raider comeback as the Minutewomen got the final out of the game.
